Yeast infections is an infection that causes irritation, discharge and intense itchiness of the vagina and the vulva. Oral sex can cause this infection as the bacteria can be spread from mouth to genital contact. This infection is very treatable.
Overgrowth of candida fungus inside the vagina which leads to a disruption in the balance of the bacteria inside the vagina and cause yeast infections. This infection is not necessarily solely caused by oral sex or by having sexual intercourse. It can be caused by antibiotics, pregnancy, uncontrolled diabetes, impaired immune system and oral contraceptives
Doctor will enquire regarding medical history and perform a pelvic exam as well as take a sample of patient’s vaginal secretion to send for testing. Results from these tests will determine the diagnosis.
Signs & symptoms:
Mild symptoms à Itching and burning in the vagina, a burning sensation is felt while having intercourse or when urinating, redness and swelling is observed on the vulva, vaginal pain, soreness and rash, watery vaginal discharge and a thick white odourless ‘cottage cheese’ vaginal discharge
Complicated symptoms à Extensive redness, swelling and itching that has led to tears or cracks or even sores, having 4 or more infections a year, being pregnant, having uncontrolled diabetes and an impaired immune system due to HIV
Uncomplicated yeast infection à Antifungal creams or ointments can be prescribed(to be applied for 1, 3 or 7 days) , as well as antifungal oral medication (single oral doseand over-the-counter antifungal medication such as vaginal suppositories.
Complicated yeast infection à Antifungal creams or ointments (for a period of 7-14 days), multidose oral medication and a medication routine to prevent repeats of the infection
Wear cotton underwear and loose-fitting bottoms, change out of swimsuits or workout attire, try to avoid hot tubs, don’t have very hot baths and avoid unnecessary antibiotic use.
