What is Birth Control

Birth control is a way for women to help prevent pregnancies from happening. There are different varieties for birth control to suit the different needs of women.

Birth control pills are the most common form of contraception. For birth control pills, women have the option of choosing between combination birth control pills or minipills. With combination birth pills, there are 2 categories that are formed under it, conventional packs or continuous dosing. Conventional packs – women will still get their periods each month. Continuous dosing – women may only get their period 4 times a year or not even get their period at all. Minipills are given when a women is breast-feeding, has health issues like blood clots in legs or if the woman is concerned about the side effects of estrogen such as hair thinning or weight gain.

Long-acting reversible contraception is also an option for women who want to be pregnant in the future but just not now or anytime soon. There are 3 types of long-acting reversible contraception, an intrauterine device, a contraceptive injection and a contraceptive implant. A prescription is required for this contraception but once it is put in use, it is very effective and when it is removed, the women’s body will immediately resume fertility.
If the women only needs birth control once in a while, then the best type of birth control for her could be male or female condoms that can be bought in pharmacies or even supermarkets and convenience stores. A contraceptive sponge may also be used or if the woman doubts its effectiveness, then perhaps a vaginal ring may be used in place of the contraceptive sponge.
Natural family planning may be an option the woman cannot or does not want to use birth control pills, have injections or insert contraceptive devices into her body. For natural family planning, it takes a lot of will power, self-control and diligence as it does not rely on any products to prevent a pregnancy from happening. Examples of natural family planning are cervical mucus method, rhythm method and the basal body temperature. These methods are used to predict when the woman will ovulate so she can know when she can have unprotected sex. Another example of natural family planning is withdrawal whereby the man withdraws his penis from inside the vagina before he ejaculates.

In the event the woman is sure she does not want to get pregnant, she can consider getting sterilized. Examples of sterilization procedures in females are tubal ligation where the fallopian tubes are tied up and Essure system which permanently blocks the fallopian tubes. This form of birth control is permanent, and if at any point in time the woman wants to conceive a child, she can get a doctor to perform a tubal ligation reversal surgery or an Essure system removal. This form of sterilization is considered permanent, the woman must think through this decision and be completely sure she wants to get this procedure done.

Emergency contraception is another form of birth control pills that is not meant to be used as a birth control pill routine but as a backup plan when a woman has had unprotected sex or when she missed a birth control pill or when method of birth control failed. It must be used within 5 days after having unprotected sexual intercourse. There are 2 types of emergency contraception, emergency contraceptive pills (plan b or morning after pills) and the copper intrauterine device.
